Why Join Speak For Yourself?
There are endless benefits to being a member of Speak For Yourself. Here are just some of the more common ways in which members can help each other.
You can learn and practise how to:
- prepare and deliver speeches and presentations
- address an audience, large or small
- organise and run meetings
- interview and be interviewed
- discuss or debate important topics
- get your message across to others
- and much more..
By observing other speakers giving their talks your listening skills can improve, you can develop your own speaking and presentation style as well as expanding your vocabulary and general knowledge.
You can overcome any fears or worries you may have in a non-threatening, supportive environment where making mistakes doesn't matter. You can eliminate bad habits such as hesitation, inappropriate gestures and repetition of meaningless phrases.
You can gain confidence in your abilities and performance through positive feedback from the other members and you will be able to help other members in return by evaluating their talks.
Most members have specific individual aims and needs which the club is happy to address within its normal meetings or possibly by arranging special events focussing on particular aspects of group communication.
Skills For Any Situation
Perhaps you have been promoted and your new job requires you to address management and staff or chair meetings. Maybe you are planning to change your job and need some practice at being interviewed.
Are you a student working towards exams and qualifications? Most courses nowadays require you to give presentations to teachers, examiners, assessors and other students.
Do you need to make a speech at a wedding or party? Have you been asked to read a lesson at church or talk about an interesting hobby to a local community group?
All of these life challenges and more can be daunting if you don't have much experience of public speaking. By joining Speak For Yourself, you can develop the skills and confidence and have fun doing it!
Bad News - Good News
The bad news is that there is a membership fee. This is £50 for 6 months. The good news is that you can attend a couple of meetings before you have to pay. You can pay monthly by standing order if that is more convenient for you. Also, if you are unemployed, a student or on low income or benefits, you can arrange a reduced membership fee with our Treasurer.
We would be delighted to see you at one of our meetings. All you need to do is turn up on the evening - you will not be forced to take part if you don't want to (although we may encourage you to do so). If you want to find out more about the club, you can talk to the Treasurer (Colin) on 01642 458459.
